About the Brisbane Anime Society

The Brisbane Anime Society is Brisbane’s longest running anime club and one of the oldest in Australia. Since 1998 we have been promoting an appreciation of Japanese animation (anime) and other related interests such as Japanese comics (manga) and other areas of pop culture throughout Brisbane.  We encourage all interested members of the community to join our club.

We hold two screenings per month at the Queensland University of Technology’s (QUT) Gardens Point campus in the city. Whilst we hold our screenings at the university, we are not affiliated with them. The emphasis of our screenings is to showcase anime that most people would not have the chance to see outside of Japan. Screenings are also an opportunity to meet people with similar interests, not only in anime and manga, but also gaming, cosplay and other related activities.

We also hold regular social events for members and non-members alike and participate in other events such as the Brisbane leg of the Supanova Pop Culture Expo.

History of the Club

The Brisbane Anime Society was formed in May 1998 and was opened to the public on the 17th of June 1998.  Originally a student club affiliated with the Queensland University of Technology, in 2001 we became a wholly separate and unaffiliated entity from the university in order to enable all members of the community to join and participate in the club.

In 2003 BAS went online at BrisbaneAnime.com with screening and event information, and an online forum.

Screening Times & Formats

Usual Screening Times and Formats
Sundays – 12:00pm to 4:00pm
Various episodes from at least 3 continually running series.

Saturdays – 4:00pm to 8:00pm
The screening commences with a preview section showing anime that has been recently released in Japan, followed by a movie or OVA and finishing with a continuously running series.

These alternate between Sunday afternoons and Saturday evenings, usually a fortnight apart, with the exceptions of avoiding holidays and events such as the Supanova convention.

Sale of Items at BAS Screenings

Any club members wishing to sell anime merchandise they no longer want or need are welcome to do so provided it is cleared by the committee beforehand. This applies to personal sales only, which means no large-scale “setting up shop” or businesses selling their goods.
